On 14 May 2013, it was reported that, in addition to being the highest rated drama launch in eight years, The Fall is likely to return for a second series of six episodes; BBC Two Controller, Janice Hadlow, is on the verge of renewing the series. Allan Cubitt has been working on the scripts and the lead actors have all signed on for a second series. Gillian Anderson will be an executive producer for Series Two.

On 21 October 2013, it was announced that Jakob Verbruggen would not be returning to direct The Fall's second series. Instead series creator Allan Cubitt will direct, with production due to begin in February 2014.

On 17 July 2014, BBC Two revealed a promo for the second season which is expected to debut in the autumn.

Production ended in June 2014, with the season expected to air beginning 13 November 2014. The Irish actor Colin Morgan joined the cast for the role of Detective Tom Anderson.
